Parental Involvement Hints

  • Communicate and check in. The more you know about your children's interests, the better you can help them manage their time learning, exercising, socializing and playing. Try taking the "Do You Know Your Gamer" quiz as a fun way to start the conversation.
  • Set rules. You might not believe it, but young people want their parents to be a big part of their lives. You're a compass guiding them toward responsible choices. Involve your kids in crafting rules for video games, TV and the Internet, and talk through each other's concerns.
  • Explain why you're setting limits, and try to be open to your children's viewpoints.
  • Share the experience. See what excites your kids. Play a video game with them. Surf the web together. Talk about what you see. You might even learn something new!
  • Keep talking. The trick is to make these discussions a comfortable, natural part of your relationship. Your kids will come to count on you checking in with them.
