Content Hints

Deciding what your kids can play and watch

  • Check the ratings. The video game, television and movie industries have developed ratings signaling such elements as suggestive themes, language and crude humor. Find out more about ratings and content descriptions.
  • Consider your family's values. The ratings system is just a guide. You might not agree with how the ratings boards categorize the material. Your most powerful adviser is your own sense of what's right for your children.
  • Explain what's off limits. Have a conversation about what content is, or isn't, appropriate for your kids. Each family will determine what fits. Talking about the reasons behind your decisions can help your children feel involved.
  • Help children understand media messages. Parents can show children how to evaluate what they see and hear, whether it's a TV ad or web video. Discussing those messages will help your children understand what they're seeing and hearing and what you feel is acceptable.
  • Adapt as they grow. Let your children know that if they stick to the rules, as they get older, they'll be allowed more freedom and access to an expanded range of games, shows and other media.
